There is billfishing,
and there is billfishing. Marlin fishing off the upper Texas coast
can be productive, if you ignore the 90-mile haul over often sloppy
seas, but it pales in all categories against the backdrop of gentle
swells, dramatic scenery and a short boat ride to the action off
Kona, Hawaii.

Humdinger Captures Hawaii's Richest Fishing Tournament
Kona, Hawaii
-- When the marlin refused to show on the first day of the 13th
Big Island Invitational Marlin Tournament (BIIMT), it looked like
there might be a repeat of last year's disappointing performance.
Fortunately, several big ones appeared over the next two days to
spread out the purse of $139,230 among 5 of the 33 boats entered
in this annual event. Continued....

KONA, Big Island,
Hawaii--We had just left the dock, exited the breakwater and were
powering up when the throbbing power below-decks was throttled back,
the boat settled into the water and Capt. Butch Chee was lowering
lures over the side of the Humdinger.

America The Bountiful
Kona
Hawaii
Although Hawaii
qualifies as an exotic destination with warm tropical breezes, a
remote Pacific locale and breathtaking island vistas, excluding
the state's great billfishery from any top 10 list would be a crime.
Kona consistently produces some of the world's biggest blue marlin,
and it's the only place on earth that boasts a grander caught in
every month of the year.

Kona, Hawaii.
If you're looking for a family vacation, Hawaii has to be pretty
high on your list. That should be fine with any fisherman, because
once you're in Hawaii, a quick trip to the fishing village of Kailua-Kona
will give you access to year-round fishing for blue, black and striped
marlin, as well as big yellowfin tuna and wahoo. Consider the world's
most reliable run of spearfish a nice springtime bonus.
It goes without
saying that this option offers a plethora of family activities,
ranging from secluded relaxation to adventurous excursions. And
since charter boats in Hawaii are numerous and relatively inexpensive,
you should be able to squeeze a day of world-class fishing into
your trip with little hassle from the wife or the pocketbook.
Season: year-round.
Spearfish peak in spring, blue marlin June to September and striped
marlin November to March. Sea condition: calm.

Humdinger Captures
Hawaiian Marlin Tournament
The highlight
of this year's tournament actually came during the final hours of
the last day. The veteran crew of Capt. Jeff Fay and Capt. Henry
"Butch" Chee on board Humdinger, a 37-foot Rybovich that
consistently places in the top of virtually every Hawaiian sport-fishing
tournament, managed to land a 634-pound marlin that proved to be
the largest of the tournament. To make their victory even sweeter,
it all happened within the last two hours of the tournament.
